In 1933 a Greek immigrant, James Petrolias, purchased a small 80-seat, 1200-square foot restaurant on Smithfield Street, Downtown, for $600.

Over the years that followed the restaurant grew to a 6,400-square foot eatery with 280 seats.

The 1933 menu featured Chicken A la King for 25 cents, which included a slice of homemade pie.

Today the Smithfield is the oldest restaurant operation from the same location in the city.

John Petrolias, James’ son, and James Petrolias, the elder James’ grandson credit the success on two things:

1.      They serve home-cooked food at reasonable prices. Everything is cooked from scratch and fits the downtown workers’ budget.

2.      They feel that their employees are part of their families and this close relationship ensures a 100% effort from all.

Lunches are from $6 and dinners from $9.
